Durango Model Trains
Exercises in Model Railroading by Bruce Longwell

This was my first layout in Durango. It was the predecessor to my HOn3 Perrins, Cascade, & Northern RR. I hadn't done anything with model trains since childhood, and upon deciding to return to the hobby, I had a field day at Caboose Hobbies in Denver and brought home most of what I thought I'd need to get started. The layout measured 48x72, and featured HO standard gauge Atlas code 100 sectional track; not a very realistic way to tame the rugged Rocky Mountains I was modeling. But I learned many useful modeling skills on this project. Painting backgrounds, molding rock, modeling trees, and scratchbuilding buildings provided many hours of enjoyment and preparation for future modeling. (Most of these buildings, trees, etc. found their way onto my HOn3 layout later on.)

This is a wide angle shot of my HOn3 layout (1994-2000). This project measured 72" at its widest point by 13 feet long. It was built on L-girder and attatched to the wall in my home. A step-by-step process of this layout, complete with pictures and captions can be accessed using the link below.
